One of the main principles of biological production is that only seeds and vegetative propagating material obtained by biological production methods are used in biological production.

Each Member State of the European Union shall ensure that an electronic database is established which includes the varieties available in its territory whose seed or vegetative propagating material has been obtained by biological production methods.

Member States of the European Union may authorise the use in biological production of seed and vegetative propagating material which has not been produced by an biological production method if the growers cannot obtain propagating material which has been produced by an biological production method.

State Plant Protection Service:

  • Maintains a database of available biological farming seeds and vegetative propagating material in the national information system for crop monitoring
  • indicates in the national information system for crop monitoring the species for which a general authorisation has been granted for the use of seeds and vegetative propagating material of conventional origin in biological farming
  • issues an individual authorisation for the use of seed and vegetative propagating material of conventional origin in biological farming
